NASCAR Xfinity Series: Elliott Sadler retires

Elliott Sadler has retired from NASCAR competition following the conclusion of the 2018 NASCAR Xfinity Series season finale.

Elliott Sadler has competed in NASCAR on some level as either a part-time driver or a full-time driver every year dating back to 1995. However, in mid-August, the driver of the #1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet in the Xfinity Series announced that this season would be his last.

Following the 2018 Xfinity Series season finale, the Ford EcoBoost 300, at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the 43-year-old Emporia, Virginia native has officially retired from NASCAR.

Sadler retires having competed in a combined 853 races across the Cup Series, Xfinity Series and Truck Series. He competed in 438 Cup Series races, 395 Xfinity Series race and 20 Truck Series races over the course of his 24-year NASCAR career.

Sadler also retires as one of only 31 drivers to win at least one race in each of these three series. He earned three Cup Series victories, 13 Xfinity Series victories and one Truck Series victory over the course of his career.

In the 1995 season, Sadler made his NASCAR debut in the Xfinity Series, where he competed in two races. He drove part-time in the series in the 1996 season before landing a full-time ride in the series in the 1997 and 1998 seasons. He earned his first three career victories in the 1997 season and two more in the 1998 season. He returned to the series as a part-time driver in the 1999 season, as he began driving full-time in the Cup Series that season after driving in two races in the series in the 1998 season.

From the 1999 season through the 2010 season, Sadler competed full-time in the Cup Series. He earned his first career victory in the 2001 season and his final two victories in the 2004 season, the season that resulted in him finishing in a career-high ninth place in the championship standings.

In the 2011 season, Sadler return to the Xfinity Series as a full-time driver, and he has competed full-time in the series ever since. He earned four victories in the 2012 season, one in the 2014 and his final three in the 2016 season. He finished in a career-high second place in the championship standings in the 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2017 seasons.

Sadler’s 20 career Truck Series starts came over the course of the 2000, 2001, 2003, 2010 and 2011 seasons. He earned his lone victory in the series in the 2010 season.
