Two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso retired from Formula 1 after the 2018 season. But is it possible that he will return to Ferrari?

Following a highly successful 17-year career in Formula 1 that resulted in him earning 32 victories, a total that ranks sixth on the all-time wins list, 97 podium finishes, a total that ranks sixth on the all-time podium finishes list, and two championships, Fernando Alonso retired from the sport following the conclusion of the 2018 season.

But is the 37-year-old Spaniard, who is considered by many fans to be not only one of the greatest drivers of this era but of all-time, really done competing in Formula 1?

There was speculation that Alonso could return to Scuderia Ferrari, the team for which he drove from the 2010 season through the 2014 season, in the 2018 season as Kimi Raikkonen’s replacement.

While Charles Leclerc, who spent the 2018 season, his rookie season, driving for Alfa Romeo Sauber, ended up being the driver named the replacement for the 2007 champion as the teammate to four-time champion Sebastian Vettel, there is now speculation that Alonso may come out of retirement to return to the Scuderia in the near future.

Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali, who is the former team principal of Ferrari, seems to believe that this is a possibility. Here is what he had to say about the matter, according to PlanetF1.

"“It would be a great story, but it is something that should not be forced. But if in the future he makes that decision, why not? Of course it depends on whether Fernando returns and to all the other people involved and I leave that decision to them.“To be honest, when you work with these types of personalities, with that much talent, you cannot say if it is difficult or not difficult. The only thing I can say is that Alonso was very strong, he was very motivated, and he wanted to achieve so much. Beyond that, if I am honest, saying that he is controversial is totally incorrect.”"

As far as Ferrari’s current driver situation is concerned, neither driver’s contract expires at the end of the 2019 season. Vettel signed a three-year contract extension in the summer of 2017 to continue driving for the team through at least the 2020 season while Leclerc’s contract, which he signed this past September, runs through at least the 2022 season.

It is hard to imagine Ferrari signing a driver who will be nearing 40 years of age by the time the 2021 season begins with so much young talent available. Alonso returning to the team just doesn’t seem possible even though his retirement did seem a bit forced after he spent his final four seasons in Formula 1 competing for a McLaren team that simply could not give him a car to compete for the results that he had been used to earning for several seasons.
