NASCAR: My Christmas wishes for the 2019 season

There are several big changes I would love to see NASCAR make. However, here are some of the smaller wishes I have for the 2019 season.

Yet another Sunday has come and gone without any Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series action, so I am here stuck listening to Christmas music during my morning commute to work. Don’t get me wrong; I enjoy most Christmas music. However, my inner Ebenezer Scrooge has a certain “bah humbug” feeling about not having any racing for a while (there are 55 days until the 2019 Daytona 500 if you were wondering).

The 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season gave us a lot of surprises throughout the season. Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. all looked poised to win what would have been their second championships at many points throughout the season, but in the end, it was Joey Logano who took the crown. In my opinion, the best thing about the 2018 season was seeing Chase Elliott finally find victory lane at Watkins Glen International in August.

‘Tis the season to be greedy and say that I hope the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season provides us with some of the best racing we will ever see. Quite a bit is happening in the offseason with drivers moving to new teams and new faces being added to the broadcast booth.

Here are three of my wishes for the 2019 season.

Three wishes for the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season

I hope to see more feuding

Now, I will admit that it does feel a little odd wishing for more scuffles and hatred to spew during the 2019 season, especially given the fact that this is the time of year during which we are all supposed to be getting along. However, I am throwing all of the holiday cheer out of the window in the hope of new rivalries, heated post-race interviews and retribution on the race track. Joey Logano gave us some of this when he moved Martin Truex Jr. at Martinsville Speedway. I want more of that to happen in 2019.

More from NASCAR Cup Series

Can we please see Fernando Alonso in a Cup car?

I don’t really think it is too clear where and what two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso is going to do now that he will not be competing in Formula 1. I would prefer and have written frequently to Santa Claus asking for him to race in a NASCAR Cup Series race in 2019.

Alonso recently took part in a ride swap with Jimmie Johnson in Bahrain, and if I have things my way, the ride swap was just a precursor to him racing in a Cup Series event. I think Watkins Glen would be the prime location for him to suit up and compete.

I am sick of the new champion already and want a new one

Joey Logano has been the NASCAR Cup Series champion now for a little over a month and I am already looking forward to a new champion to be crowned. Don’t get me wrong; this has nothing to do with Logano. I neither love nor hate the fact that he won the 2018 championship. I am just saying I would like to see someone else win in 2019. If I had to pick, the top three drivers I would want to win it all in 2019 it would be Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson or Aric Almirola.

Wrap-up

It’s rather fitting that this post be finalized with a “wrap-up” given the fact that it is the holiday season. As mentioned previously, these are some of my very small wishes for the 2019 season that, in my opinion, could happen.

In the future, I will be asking for much bigger happenings, but I feel that this is a good start for next season. Down the road, I would like to see new short tracks added to the schedule, something done about post-race inspection failures and a more dirt racing-like format with heats and a feature. For now, however, I feel like these three items will do.
