Kyle Busch overcame a pit road speeding penalty to win the fifth race of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season, the Auto Club 400, at Auto Club Speedway.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch earned his second victory of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season and his second consecutive victory by winning the season’s fifth race, the Auto Club 400, at Auto Club Speedway. In doing so, he became the first driver to win multiple Cup Series races this season.

This victory is Busch’s 53rd career Cup Series victory, and it is his 200th career NASCAR victory, as he has also earned an all-time record 94 Xfinity Series victories and an all-time record 53 Truck Series victories. He and Richard Petty now share the all-time NASCAR wins record, as Petty earned 200 Cup Series victories over the course of his career in the sport.

Busch, who started the 200-lap race around the four-turn, 2.0-mile (3.219-kilometer) Auto Club Speedway oval in Fontana, California in fourth place in his #18 Toyota, won it by 2.354 seconds over Team Penske’s Joey Logano, who finished in second in his #22 Ford. Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski finished in third in his #2 Ford.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick and Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney rounded out the top five by finishing in fourth and fifth place in their #4 Ford and #12 Ford, respectively. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kurt Busch was the highest finishing Chevrolet driver for the third time in the last four races, as he finished in sixth in his #1 Chevrolet.

Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr., Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almirola and Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon, who started the race from the pole position, rounded out the top 10 by finishing in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #11 Toyota, #19 Toyota, #10 Ford and #3 Chevrolet, respectively.

The race featured a total of 17 lead changes among eight drivers. Aside of Busch, who led more laps than anybody else in the field with 134 laps lad despite the fact that he was issued a penalty for speeding in the pits during the race’s third and final stage and was sent to the back of the lead lap as a result of it, seven drivers led at least one lap of the race.

These seven drivers were Logano, Keselowski, Blaney, Hamlin, Almirola, Roush Fenway Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Hendrick Motorsports’ Williams Byron. In addition to winning the race, Busch also won stages one and two.

The race also featured a total of four caution flag periods, of which two took place as a result of on-track incidents and two took place as a result of the usual endings of stages one and two, for 20 laps. Of the 38 drivers who started the race, 36 finished it, and of the 36 drivers who finished it, 21 finished on the lead lap.
