NASCAR Cup Series: Chase Elliott takes pole for 2019 Food City 500

Chase Elliott took his first pole position of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season for the season’s eighth race, the Food City 500, at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott became the eighth different driver to take a pole position through the first eight races of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season, as he took the pole position for the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Elliott took the pole position for the season’s eighth race, the 500-lap race around the four-turn, 0.533-mile (0.858-kilometer) high-banked Bristol Motor Speedway oval in Bristol, Tennessee, by recording a top lap time of 14.568 seconds (131.713 miles per hour) in the third and final round of qualifying for the race in his #9 Chevrolet.

Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron qualified in second place in his #24 Chevrolet, giving Hendrick Motorsports their second consecutive front row lockout and their third front row lockout of the season.

Byron started from the pole position alongside teammate Alex Bowman in the season opener, the Daytona 500, at Daytona International Speedway while Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson started from the pole position alongside Byron in last Sunday’s race at Texas Motor Speedway.

Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney was the highest qualifying Ford driver for this Sunday’s race, as he qualified in third place in his #12 Ford. Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Erik Jones and Denny Hamlin were the highest qualifying Toyota drivers for this race, as they qualified in fourth and fifth in their #20 Toyota and #11 Toyota, respectively.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almirola, Team Penske’s Joey Logano, Stewart-Haas Racing’s Clint Bowyer and Wood Brothers Racing’s Paul Menard gave Ford drivers five of the top nine positions on the starting grid by qualifying in sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth place in their #10 Ford, #22 Ford, #14 Ford and #21 Ford, respectively.

Johnson qualified in 10th place in his #48 Chevrolet. Roush Fenway Racing’s Ryan Newman and Team Penske’s Brad Kesewloski were the slowest two of the 12 drivers who advanced to the third and final round of qualifying for this race. They qualified in 11th and 12th in their #6 Ford and #2 Ford, respectively.
