NASCAR: Darrell Wallace Jr. wins 2019 Open stage two, advances to All-Star Race

Darrell Wallace Jr. has won the second stage of the 2019 Monster Energy Open to secure himself a spot in the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race.

Richard Petty Motorsports’ Darrell Wallace Jr. won the second of three stages of the 2019 Monster Energy Open at Charlotte Motor Speedway to advance to the Monster Energy NASCAR All-Star Race at the track later tonight.

The second stage of this 50-lap (will be longer because the first two stages both went into overtime) Open around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) Charlotte Motor Speedway oval in Concord, North Carolina was a 25-lap stage, and after starting the race in 10th place, he won this stage by 0.108 seconds in his #43 Chevrolet over Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson in second in his #42 Chevrolet.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Daniel Suarez was Wallace Jr.’s biggest challenger at the end of the second stage, but he spun out and ended up finishing in third place in his #41 Ford.

As a result, Wallace Jr. will not compete in the race’s remaining 10-lap shootout that is stage three. He is set to start the 85-lap All-Star Race at the track in 17th place. Whoever wins stage three will be set to start this race in 18th.

Germain Racing’s Ty Dillon finished in fourth place in his #13 Chevrolet ahead of Front Row Motorsports’ David Ragan in fifth in his #38 Ford. Leavine Family Racing’s Matt DiBenedetto was the highest finishing Toyota driver of the stage. He finished in sixth in his #95 Toyota.

Roush Fenway Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr., JTG Daugherty Racing rookie Ryan Preece, Go Fas Racing’s Corey LaJoie and Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman rounded out the top 10 by finishing in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #17 Ford, #47 Chevrolet, #32 Ford and #88 Chevrolet, respectively.

Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron won the first stage of the Open to lock himself into the 16th place starting position for the All-Star Race and did not compete in the second stage.

The winner of the All-Star Fan Vote, or the highest finisher in the Fan Vote who does not win a stage of the Open, is also set to advance to the All-Star Race as well. He is set to start the race in 19th place.
