Lewis Hamilton took his second pole position of the 2019 Formula 1 season for the season’s sixth race, the Monaco Grand Prix, at Circuit de Monaco.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton took the pole position for the sixth race on the 17-race 2019 Formula 1 schedule, the Monaco Grand Prix, at Circuit de Monaco. This pole position is his second pole position of the season and the 85th pole position of his Formula 1 career, further extending his all-time record.

Hamilton took the pole position for the 78-lap race around the 19-turn, 2.074-mile (3.338-kilometer) Circuit de Monaco temporary street circuit in Monte Carlo, Monaco by recording a top lap time of 70.166 seconds (106.411 miles per hour), a new track record, in the third and final qualifying session for the race.

Valtteri Bottas qualified in second place for this race by recording a top lap time of 70.252 seconds (106.280 miles per hour), which was just 0.086 seconds (0.131 miles per hour) slower than that of Hamilton, giving Mercedes their fourth consecutive front row lockout and their fifth of the season.

Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly are set to round out the top five on the starting grid after qualifying in third, fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Rich Energy Haas’ Kevin Magnussen, Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo, Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat, McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr. and Toro Rosso rookie Alexander Albon are set to round out the top 10 on the starting grid after qualifying in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.

Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg, McLaren rookie Lando Norris, Haas’ Romain Grosjean and Alfa Romeo Racing teammates Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi, a rookie, were eliminated following the second round of qualifying for the race and are set to start in 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th place, respectively.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, SportPesa Racing Point teammates Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll and ROKiT Williams Racing teammates George Russell, a rookie, and Robert Kubica were eliminated following the first round of qualifying for the race and are set to start in 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th place, respectively.

The major surprise of this qualifying session was the fact that Leclerc was unable to advance out of the first round of qualifying. Even after missing the weighbridge coming into the pits following his qualifying attempt, he had time to go out and make another attempt, and he wanted to do so.

But Ferrari felt that Leclerc’s time was secure in the top 15 for him to advance to the second round of qualifying for his home race. That was not the case, and the 21-year-old Monegasque ended up being bumped out of the top 15 by Vettel, who shot up to first place, and failing to advance, and there was nothing he could do about it.

Meanwhile, Russell and Kubica have still not yet outqualified any non-Williams driver at any point so far this season, and Kubica has still not yet outqualified Russell.
