Martin Truex Jr. earned his third victory of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season by winning the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. appeared to be out of the fight to earn his third victory of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season in the season’s 13th race, the Coca-Cola 600, at Charlotte Motor Speedway after blowing a tire and hitting the wall early.

But Truex Jr., who started the 400-lap race around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) Charlotte Motor Speedway oval in Concord, North Carolina in 14th place in his #19 Toyota, rallied and won the race for the second time in the last four seasons.

Truex Jr. won this race by 0.330 seconds over Team Penske’s Joey Logano, who finished in second place in his #22 Ford, and he has now won three of the last five races after failing to win any of the first eight races in his first season driving for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch finished Truex Jr. and Logano in third place in his #18 Toyota. Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott was the highest finishing Chevrolet driver of the race. He finished in fourth in his #9 Chevrolet. Roush Fenway Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr. rounded out the top five by finishing in fifth in his #17 Ford.

JTG Daugherty Racing’s Chris Buescher, Hendrick Motorsports teammates Alex Bowman, Jimmie Johnson and William Byron, who started the race from the pole position, and Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick rounded out the top 10 by finishing in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #37 Chevrolet, #88 Chevrolet, #48 Chevrolet, #24 Chevrolet and #4 Ford, respectively.

This race featured a total of 30 lead changes among 11 drivers. Aside of Truex Jr., who led more laps than anybody else in the field with 116 laps led, 10 other drivers led at least one lap of the race.

The 10 drivers aside of Truex Jr. who led at least one lap of this race were Busch, Elliott, Bowman, Byron, Harvick, Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney, Front Row Motorsports’ David Ragan, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin, Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski and Richard Childress Racing rookie Daniel Hemric.

The race also featured a season-high 17 caution flag periods, including three for the endings of stage one, stage two and stage three, as the race was a four-stage race as opposed to a three-stage race, and 14 as a result of on-track incidents.

The last time a Cup Series race featured at least 17 caution flag periods was in the November race at Martinsville Speedway in the 2015 season. This race featured a total of 18 caution flag periods. Of the 40 drivers who started tonight’s race, 32 finished it, and of these 32 drivers, 17 finished on the lead lap.
