The Mexican Grand Prix is set to return to Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez through at least the 2022 Formula 1 season on a new three-year contract extension.

Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is set to return to the Formula 1 schedule through at least the 2022 season, as the Mexican Grand Prix has been confirmed for each of the next three years.

This news comes after an agreement was reached between Formula 1, the government of Mexico City, Mexico and Mexican Grand Prix race promoter Corporacion Interamericana de Entretenimiento (CIE). A three-year contract extension was signed today during a press conference that was held in the Antiguo Palacio del Ayuntamiento in Mexico City.

Here is what Formula 1 chairman and CEO Chase Carey had to say about this agreement, according to Formula 1.

"“We are pleased to have renewed our partnership with Mexico City, which will now host the Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix until at least 2022. Ever since it returned to the championship calendar in 2015, this event has always proved to be amazingly popular with the public and fans, not just in Mexico, but also around the world. Proof of this is the fact that the race promoter has won the FIA award for the best event no fewer than four years in a row and, in those four years, over 1.3 million spectators have attended the Grand Prix. The Grand Prix has also been an important economic driver for the city, reinforcing its credentials as a centre for tourism. I would like to thank the Mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and the entire government of Mexico City for all their efforts in ensuring that Formula 1 continues in Mexico and I look forward to seeing another big crowd of fans at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez from 25 to 27 October for the Formula 1 Gran Premio de Mexico 2019.”"

Here is what Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo had to say about it, according to Formula 1.

"“The presence of Formula 1 in the city for further three more years, was achieved for the first time through a new financing model in which public resources are not used. Previously the Federal Government collaborated with the payment for the event. The Mexico City government will be an intermediary, creating a trust that will raise the private investment required to deliver this international event. The price of the tickets will remain the same as in previous years.”"

Finally, here is what CIE president and CEO Alejandro Soberon had to say, according to Formula 1.

"“I want to deeply thank Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum and the Government of Mexico City for the vote of confidence they have entrusted in us. At CIE, we remain committed to promoting and operating the highest quality events in the world. Through this international platform, we have the opportunity to showcase the diverse cultural wealth of this fantastic city. We look forward to welcoming the thousands of tourists, both domestic and foreign to this award-winning event. In addition, I want to thank the Formula 1 fans both in Mexico and abroad – without a doubt, your energy and passion has made our Grand Prix a very unique and special experience.”"

The 17-turn, 2.674-mile (4.303-kilometer) Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez road course in Mexico City has hosted Formula 1 races since the 1963 season, although only 19 races have been held at the track and the track length has been slightly altered over the years.

One race was hosted at the track each season from the 1963 season through the 1970 season before it was removed from the schedule. It returned to the schedule in the 1986 season and hosted one race each year through the 1992 season before it was removed from the schedule again.

The track returned to the schedule in the 2015 season and has remained there ever since. There were rumors that the 2019 season would be its final season on the schedule, but today’s confirmation proved those rumors false.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport teammates Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton won the races at the track in the 2015 season and the 2016 season, respectively. Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen is now the two-time reigning winner after winning it in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.
