As many drivers ran out of fuel, Kevin Harvick held off Denny Hamlin to secure his second victory of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season in the Consumers Energy 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick earned his second victory of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season, his second victory in the last four races and his second consecutive victory in the August race at Michigan International Speedway by holding off Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin to win the Consumers Energy 400, the 23rd of 36 races on the schedule.

As several drivers ran out of fuel, Harvick, who started this 200-lap race around the four-turn, 2.0-mile (3.219-kilometer) Michigan International Speedway oval in Brooklyn, Michigan in second place in his #4 Ford and cut a tire early on, crossed the finish line 1.054 seconds ahead of a hard-charging Hamlin in his #11 Toyota.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson, who overcame an early pit road speeding penalty, ended up being the highest finishing Chevrolet driver of the race in third place in his #42 Chevrolet. But because there was so much fuel saving going on and so many drivers running out of fuel, Larson finished 16.800 seconds behind Harvick.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. and Stewart-Haas Racing’s Daniel Suarez, whose name really wasn’t mentioned throughout the race until it ended, finished in fourth and fifth place in their #19 Toyota and #41 Ford, respectively.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch, JTG Daugherty Racing rookie Ryan Preece and Hendrick Motorsports teammates William Byron, Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman rounded out the top 10 by finishing in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #18 Toyota, #47 Chevrolet, #24 Chevrolet, #9 Chevrolet, and #88 Chevrolet.

What could have been a 1-2-3 finish, or even a 1-2-3-4 finish including Wood Brothers Racing’s Paul Menard, for Team Penske went out the window because this race became a fuel mileage race.

Menard finished in 15th place in his #21 Ford ahead of Team Penske teammates Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney in 17th, 19th and 24th in their #22 Ford, #2 Ford and #12 Ford, respectively. Keselowski started the race from the pole position and led more laps than anybody else in the field with 66 laps led, and Logano finished in second in this category with 52 laps led.

Harvick won the race having led 22 laps. Aside of him, Keselowski and Logano, five drivers led at least one lap of the race. These drivers were Hamlin, Truex, Busch, Blaney and Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kurt Busch. The eight drivers who led this race exchanged the lead 19 times.

This race featured six caution flag periods, of which four took place as a result of on-track incidents and two took place to close out stages one and two. Of the 38 drivers who started the race, only two failed to finish it, and of the 36 drivers who finished it, 24 finished on the lead lap.
