NASCAR: Alex Bowman backs ‘silver spoon’ comment, slams Austin Dillon again
By Asher Fair
Alex Bowman stood by his “silver spoon” comment about fellow NASCAR Cup Series driver Austin Dillon, and he further slammed him.
After Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman made contact with Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon during the NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Richmond Raceway this past Saturday night, Dillon was immediately instructed to “hit him back” on the radio.
This initial contact took place in turn one of the four-turn, 0.75-mile (1.207-kilometer) Richmond Raceway oval in Richmond, Virginia. Between turns three and four on the same lap, Dillon exacted revenge and sent Bowman spinning.
Bowman proceeded to blast Dillon on the radio, referencing the fact that he has only ever driven for his grandfather’s team throughout the entirety of his 10-year full-time NASCAR career.
“I will shove that silver spoon he’s been fed on his whole life up his ass,” stated an angry Bowman.
Now, leading up to the third and final race of the opening round, the round of 16, of the four-round, 10-race playoffs at the Charlotte Motor Speedway roval, Bowman has reiterated that he stands by his comments.
“I said what I said. Obviously frustrated with that situation,” he said.
He went on to throw additional shade at Dillon.
“Not immediately worried about it. Typically don’t see him at these places anyway.”

Bowman, unlike Dillon, qualified for the playoffs this season, and he did so both on the strength of his regular season point total and by earning his first victory at Chicagoland Speedway in late June.
Dillon, meanwhile, failed to qualify for the playoffs for the first time since the 2015 season with his 23rd place finish in the regular season standings, and he failed to place in the top five in any of the regular season’s 26 races.
Bowman is set to enter the round of 16 finale two points below the round of 12 cut line after finishing in 23rd place in the race at Richmond Raceway to follow up his sixth place finish in the round of 16 opener at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Dillon now sits in 22nd in the championship standings.
Will anything come of the run-in between Alex Bowman and Austin Dillon from last Saturday night at Richmond Raceway, particular as it pertains to affecting Bowman’s chances to advance through the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs?
This Sunday afternoon’s race, the Bank of America Roval 400, is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. ET, and it is set to be broadcast live from the Charlotte Motor Speedway roval in Concord, North Carolina on NBC.
