Chase Elliott overcame a wreck from the lead to secure his third victory of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series season in the Bank of America Roval 400 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway roval.

Shortly after winning stage two of the third and final race of the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs at the Charlotte Motor Speedway roval, Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott led the field to a restart.

But he completely overshot turn one of the 17-turn, 2.28-mile (3.669-kilometer) Charlotte Motor Speedway roval in Concord, North Carolina, and his #9 Chevrolet ended up in the tire barrier.

Here is a video of this incident.

His Hendrick Motorsports crew made repairs to his car, and he restarted the race in 31st place. From there, he carved his way to the top five, and on the race’s final restart, he was running in third.

Shortly thereafter, he blew by Joe Gibbs Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. and Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick before going on to win the race by 3.016 seconds over teammate Alex Bowman, who started from the rear of the field. Bowman qualified his #88 Chevrolet in second place, but he wrecked in practice and was forced to go to a backup car. He was involved in several early wrecks that he, like Elliott, overcame.

Elliott did his victory burnout in the form of a reenactment of the wreck that had many fans believing he had taken a great shot at winning the race and throw it into the barriers.

Harvick ended up finishing in third place in his #4 Ford. Truex ended up finishing in seventh in his #19 Toyota. Finishing between them in fourth, fifth and sixth were Stewart-Haas Racing’s Clint Bowyer, Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski and Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron in their #14 Ford, #2 Ford and #24 Chevrolet, respectively.

Team Penske’s Ryan Blaney, Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson and Team Penske’s Joey Logano rounded out the top 10 by finishing in eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #12 Ford, #48 Chevrolet and #22 Ford, respectively.

This 109-lap race featured a total of 13 lead changes among nine drivers. Elliott, who started in 19th place, led more laps than anybody else in the field with 35 laps led.

Harvick, Bowyer, Keselowski, Byron, who started from the pole position, Truex, Logano, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson and Richard Childress Racing rookie Daniel Hemric also led at least one lap of the race. Larson won stage one and Elliott won stage two.

The race featured 10 caution flag periods, including nine that took place as a result of on-track incidents, as the caution flag period that ended stage one took place as a result of an on-track incident. Of the 40 drivers who started the race, 35 finished it and 34 finished on the lead lap.
