Is there any truth to the rumors suggesting that legendary former boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is involved in the ownership of a new NASCAR Cup Series team?

Website The Money Team Racing, for which the domain was registered back in May, indicates that former professional boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is involved with a potential startup NASCAR Cup Series team called The Money Team Racing, named after lifestyle brand The Money Team that he inspired.

This website now says nothing more than “More Info Coming Soon”, although an archived version of the website provides a lot more insight into this rumor.

The website indicates that the team are set to announce their driver soon and that they are set to make their debut in the 2019 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the Ford EcoBoost 400, in just over two weeks.

The website also contains a picture of a #50 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 that contains all of the logos, including the Monster Energy logo, that any other Cup Series car contains. There is a small area in which the website states that the The Money Team Racing logo will be the team’s sponsor.

More from NASCAR Cup Series

There is also a Facebook page, a private Instagram account and a Twitter account for the team, although none of them have garnered much popularity since this rumor started despite the fact that they were created quite awhile ago.

As of now, there has been no official word on anything Mayweather-related in the Cup Series. So is there any truth to this seemingly bizarre rumor?

The “bizarre” part of this rumor really shouldn’t be. Mayweather is retired from boxing now, and if he wants to own a Cup Series team, he will own a Cup Series team. Money is the farthest from an issue for the boxer who went 50-0, referenced by the #50 on the team’s supposed Chevrolet on their website.

But perhaps most notably, there is also a LinkedIn page for the team, and their bio states the following: “Would you like to setup a marketing plan to reach over 50 million people worldwide? We are the team to do that for you!” Meanwhile, their posts, which date back to last month, are clearly targeting an audience seeking to get their brand involved in NASCAR.

They have one employee listed, and that employee is listed as having been their marketing manager since April of 2019.

Beyond the Flag spoke directly with this employee about a situation involving an active NASCAR driver in August, and based on that discussion, there is no doubt that this position listing is the truth.

As such, the question seems not to be whether or not the Mayweather rumor is fake. The question seems to be whether or not everything will come together for the team to operate.

So while there is nothing confirmed, there is a lot more backing to this rumor than the seemingly recurrent rumor that Carl Edwards is returning to the Cup Series. Floyd Mayweather Jr. may very well get involved in NASCAR in the near future.

Then again, they don’t call it a “rumor” for no reason.
