With a chance to clinch his sixth career Formula 1 world championship in the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas, here is how Lewis Hamilton can pull it off.

With just three races remaining on the 21-race 2019 Formula 1 schedule, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton has opened up a 74-point lead in the driver standings over teammate Valtteri Bottas.

The 34-year-old Briton and the 30-year-old Finn are the only two drivers mathematically left in the championship battle with only the United States Grand Prix, the Brazilian Grand Prix and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix remaining on the schedule.

There are a maximum of 78 points left on the table for each driver, 26 in each race (25 for winning and one for recording the fastest lap), so realistically, Bottas doesn’t stand much of a chance.

Nevertheless, Hamilton still hasn’t officially become the first six-time champion since seven-time champion Michael Schumacher was crowned for the sixth time back in 2003.

How can he change that in this Sunday’s 56-lap United States Grand Prix around the 20-turn, 3.427-mile (5.515-kilometer) Circuit of the Americas road course in Austin, Texas?

Needing to be 51 points, not necessarily 52 since he already clinched the tiebreaker (10 victories to Bottas’s three), ahead of his teammate coming out of this race, here is how Hamilton can be crowned Formula 1 world champion for the sixth time this Sunday.

With a top eight finish

  • Hamilton wins the championship
    • An eighth place finish is worth four (4) points
    • Bottas can only score 25 points with a win, 26 points with a win and a fastest lap

With a ninth place finish and fastest lap

  • Hamilton wins the championship
    • A ninth place finish and fastest lap combined are worth three (3) points
    • Bottas can only score 25 points with a win if Hamilton records the fastest lap

With a ninth place finish and no fastest lap

  • Hamilton wins the championship IF…
    • Bottas doesn’t win
      • A ninth place finish is worth two (2) points
      • A second place finish is worth 18 points

With a 10th place finish or lower

  • Hamilton wins the championship IF…
    • Bottas doesn’t win
      • 10th place finish is worth one (1) point; anything lower is worth zero (0)
      • Second place finish is worth 18 points
