Following the Bluegreen Vacations Duels, the starting lineup for the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season-opening Daytona 500 is set.

With this past Sunday’s single-car qualifying session at Daytona International Speedway and both of Thursday evening’s Bluegreen Vacations Duels at the track in the books following a rain delay, the 40-car field and full starting lineup for the opening race of the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season, the 62nd annual Daytona 500, is set.

JTG Daugherty Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman entered Thursday’s two 60-lap Duels around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) high-banked superspeedway oval in Daytona Beach, Florida as the only two drivers who knew their starting positions for this Sunday afternoon’s 200-lap main event ahead of time.

Stenhouse took the pole position in his #47 Chevrolet this past Sunday while Bowman qualified in second place in his #88 Chevrolet.

The rest of the starting lineup was determined by the results of these two races.

Team Penske’s Joey Logano won the first to secure the third place starting position in his #22 Ford while Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron won the second to secure the fourth place starting position in his #24 Chevrolet.

The battle simply to get into the race was also on display throughout both Duels with five drivers battling for two spots.

Kaulig Racing’s Justin Haley and Beard Motorsports’ Brendan Gaughan had already locked up their spots in the field in this past Sunday’s single-car qualifying session, leaving MBM Motorsports teammates Timmy Hill and Chad Finchum, Gaunt Brothers Racing’s Daniel Suarez, Rick Ware Racing’s J.J. Yeley and Premium Motorsports’ Reed Sorenson still seeking to secure their spots.

Suarez crashed out of the first Duel while Haley beat both Sorenson and Finchum, so the rules reverted to qualifying times, giving Sorenson the 40th and final starting spot. Yeley crashed out of the second Duel while Hill beat Gaughan, meaning that Hill locked himself into the race and Gaughan was awarded the 39th and final starting spot based on his qualifying time.

The rest of the starting order was set with the drivers in the first Duel being awarded the odd starting positions based on where they finished and the drivers in the second Duel being awarded the even starting positions based on where they finished.
