For the second season in a row, Joey Logano has won the first of two NASCAR Cup Series races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

For the second consecutive season, the driver behind the wheel of the Pennzoil-sponsored car has taken the checkered flag to win the Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Once again, it was Team Penske’s Joey Logano securing his first victory of the new NASCAR Cup Series season at the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) oval in Las Vegas, Nevada, winning the race after starting in third place in his #22 Ford.

Logano won the season’s second race under caution, as several cars were involved in incidents after he took the white flag, just one lap following the race’s final restart.

Logano was supposed to have pitted during the final caution flag period, which was caused when Roush Fenway Racing’s Ross Chastain spun out, but miscommunication with crew chief Paul Wolfe allowed him to stay out, inherit the lead and ultimately capitalize with his first win since last June when he won at Michigan International Speedway.

Wood Brothers Racing, which have a technical alliance with Team Penske, secured their best finish since Ryan Blaney won at Pocono Raceway back in June of 2017, as Matt DiBenedetto tied his career-high finish with a second place result behind the wheel of the #21 Ford.

JTG Daugherty Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr. was the highest finishing Chevrolet driver in third place behind the wheel of the #47 Chevrolet, and it was his big push of Logano on the final restart that helped Logano grab the victory.

Stenhouse got a huge boost when a timely caution flag came out in the third and final stage when Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott had a flat tire and made contact with the wall. Stenhouse had not yet pitted and ended up not losing much track position when he made his pit stop under caution.

Chevrolet drivers rounded out the top six, with Richard Childress Racing’s Austin Dillon, Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson and Richard Petty Motorsports’ Bubba Wallace finishing in fourth, fifth and sixth place in their #3 Chevrolet, #48 Chevrolet and #43 Chevrolet, respectively.

Team Penske’s Brad Keselowski finishing in seventh place in his #2 Ford ahead of Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick in eighth in his #4 Ford. Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson finished in ninth in his #42 Chevrolet ahead of Germain Racing’s Ty Dillon in 10th in his #13 Chevrolet.

Blaney, who led the race behind the wheel of the #12 Ford prior to the final caution flag period, had to settle for 11th place after coming into the pits for new tires. He was one of several drivers who ran well throughout the race but could not capitalize with good finishes.

Elliott won both stages one and two, giving him three stage wins in four tries so far this season, but a flat tire led to small contact and left him one lap down and unable to battle back. He finished in 26th place in his #9 Chevrolet.

Race polesitter Martin Truex Jr. of Joe Gibbs Racing ran up front for most of the race, despite the fact that he led only one lap, but his chances of winning took a hit when he hit the turn four wall. He finished in 20th place in his #19 Toyota.

Joe Gibbs Racing had an abysmal day as a whole after opening the 2020 season with Denny Hamlin winning the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. Kyle Busch led the team and all of the Toyota drivers with a 15th place finish behind the wheel of the #18 Toyota. Hamlin placed 17th in his #11 Toyota while Erik Jones crossed the line 23rd in his #20 Toyota.

The race featured 24 lead changes among seven leaders. Logano led 54 laps of the race, third behind Harvick (92) and Elliott (70). The other four leaders were Stenhouse, Austin Dillon, Blaney and Truex.
