Indy 500: Provisional entry list for first ever August race
By Asher Fair
The Indy 500 has been postponed by nearly three months from Memorial Day Sunday to the fourth Sunday in August. Here is the current entry list for this race.
For the first time since the final year of World War II in 1945, we will not be “Back Home Again In Indiana” this Memorial Day weekend for the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The coronavirus pandemic has wreaked havoc on what was a 17-race 2020 IndyCar schedule. In total, three races have been canceled, five have been postponed and one has been moved up by a week. The season now contains 14 races, although none of their dates are set in stone.

The Indy 500, initially scheduled to take place on its usual Memorial Day Sunday date in May, is one of the five races that was postponed, as the series took the unprecedented but correct measure to move the race back by nearly three months from Sunday, May 24 to Sunday, August 23.
It is set to maintain its usual two-week schedule, with practice during one week leading into qualifying over the weekend and the race taking place the following Sunday after a couple more days of practice, including Carb Day.
This schedule overhaul at the Brickyard caused the race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course to be bumped forward by a week while causing the race at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway to be moved back by a week and a day.
With all things considered, the best-case scenario is that the 104th running of the 200-lap “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” takes place around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) oval in Speedway Indiana on Sunday, August 23 in front of a crowd of over 300,000 fans, as is now planned.
What do we know about the entry list, being more than four and a half months away from the race instead of just a month and a half?
Nothing has changed on the entry list since the scheduled start of the 2020 IndyCar season on Sunday, March 15. There are 32 confirmed cars with 30 confirmed drivers thus far with four additional cars speculated.
The only difference is that the entry list has nearly three additional months to grow than it otherwise would have, assuming that none of the confirmed entries are forced to back out due to the financial strain that has resulted from this pandemic.
Here is an early look.
