The 2020 IndyCar schedule has been overhauled once again, as one doubleheader was removed and three weekends were turned into doubleheader weekends.

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 IndyCar schedule already looked nothing like it did when it was revealed last September.

Now it has been overhauled again.

More from IndyCar

A week and a half ago, IndyCar revealed an overhauled 14-race schedule that involved three cancellations, five postponements and one race moved up by a week.

Now the series has released a 15-race schedule with even more changes.

In the 14-race schedule, the season was slated to get underway with the doubleheader at the Raceway at Belle Isle Park on Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31. That doubleheader has now been scrapped from the schedule, and the race at Texas Motor Speedway is now scheduled to start the season on Saturday, June 6.

But now there are three more doubleheaders at venues that were already scheduled to host race this season.

The race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday, July 18 is scheduled to take place as planned, but now there is a second race at the venue scheduled to take place on Friday, July 17.

The race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca on Sunday, September 20 is scheduled to take place as planned, albeit no longer as the season finale, but now there is a second race at the track scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 19.

Finally, the series is now scheduled to make not two but three trips to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as the road course is scheduled to host a second race on Saturday, October 3 in addition to the race that was recently moved from Saturday, May 9 to Saturday, July 4.

“We’re committed to bringing fans as much on-track action as possible,” said Penske Entertainment Corp. President and CEO Mark Miles. “Our updated schedule features additional racing at fan-favorite venues and adds to the total number of events on our calendar. The COVID-19 situation continues to be dynamic and challenging for everyone, so we have developed contingency plans which will allow us to respond to changing conditions. Our goal is to preserve as much racing competition as possible while prioritizing the health and safety of our participants and spectators.”

“Like our fans, we’re disappointed we won’t be racing in Detroit this year. However, we’re excited to return to Belle Isle in 2021 and know we’ll put on a great show for everyone when we do. We also appreciate the flexibility and support of our event promoters at Iowa Speedway and Laguna Seca, who have enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to host double-headers.”
