Kevin Harvick’s NASCAR Cup Series crew chief, Rodney Childers, shot down rumors that he was “getting out of racing”, although he said he understood why they may have started.

In times of uncertainty, rumors are not uncommon, especially due to how easy they are able to spread on social media. Several crazy rumors tend to emerge in times like these, and NASCAR is certainly not exempt from this phenomenon.

For some reason, a rumor emerged that long-time Cup Series crew chief Rodney Childers would be “getting out of racing” in the near future.

As for how this bizarre rumor got started, especially with the 2020 season currently suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, one fan had a theory.

Childers had been getting rid of his iRacing setup, and a fan pointed out that this had happened just before these rumors began to circulate. Childers did say that he understood why a rumor of this nature could have arisen from this situation.

But he wanted to stop it before it grew bigger, letting fans know that he is committed to the #4 team and Kevin Harvick.

More from NASCAR Cup Series

The 43-year-old Mooresville, North Carolina native has been a Cup Series crew chief since the 2005 season, and he has been the crew chief for Harvick and the #4 team since Harvick arrived at Stewart-Haas Racing ahead of the 2014 season.

Childers and Harvick won the 2014 championship together, and they have qualified for five of the six Championship 4s that have been contested since the new playoff format was introduced in 2014.

Childers has 29 wins as a crew chief, including 26 with Harvick. He has missed four of Harvick’s 220 starts since the 2014 season due to various suspensions.

Through the first four races of the 2020 season, Harvick leads the championship standings on the strength of a series-best average finish of 6.00, although he has yet to win a race this year.
