With very little information public about Floyd Mayweather’s NASCAR team, The Money Team Racing, will they still make their Cup Series debut in 2020?

Late in the 2019 season, a rumor emerged that former professional boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. was involved in a new NASCAR Cup Series team.

While there is still no confirmation of anything about the matter, this has evolved into more than just a rumor. This team is called The Money Team Racing, and it is named after the lifestyle brand, The Money Team, which Mayweather inspired.

This rumor heated up due to the fact that the The Money Team Racing website provided several details about the team entering the Cup Series. However, those details were later replaced by one screen that simply read “More Info Coming Soon”.

This one screen, which had been in place for several months, was recently replaced by a team statement about NASCAR’s recent actions amid ongoing racial tensions in the United States.

It reads as follows:

"“We at TMT Racing fully embrace the efforts by NASCAR to recognize the injustices faced by people of color and the need to listen, learn and act.”"

The sport’s recent actions include the banning of all Confederate flags from all of their events and properties and allowing on-track personnel to kneel during the national anthem.

Additionally, the #43 Chevrolet of Richard Petty Motorsports’ Bubba Wallace, the lone African-American Cup Series driver, featured the phrase “#BlackLivesMatter” during Wednesday night’s race at Martinsville Speedway. These actions came after the sport announced that they were committed to creating change and addressing the issues that have dominated the headlines in recent weeks.

So when will The Money Team Racing actually debut their #50 Chevrolet, numbered after Mayweather’s perfect 50-0 boxing record?

According to Sports Business Journal’s Adam Stern, that debut is still slated to come later in the 2020 season, despite the shifts in the schedule that have been caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

During the 10-week hiatus caused by the pandemic, Stern put out a similar report about The Money Team Racing, and he stated that it would likely be Jeffrey Earnhardt behind the wheel of the #50 Chevrolet whenever they make their debut.

Earnhardt competing for the team at the Cup level would extend a streak that currently sits at 45 consecutive seasons with an Earnhardt behind the wheel at NASCAR’s highest level of competition for at least one race.
