Michael McDowell drew the pole position for this Wednesday evening’s NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Open at Bristol Motor Speedway.

By virtue of a random draw, Front Row Motorsports’ Michael McDowell took the pole position for the NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Open this Wednesday evening at Bristol Motor Speedway leading up to the All-Star Race.

This All-Star Open, like the All-Star race itself, is set to be the first one held at a track other than Charlotte Motor Speedway since 1986 when it was held at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

McDowell is set to lead the 21-driver field, which consists of everyone who is not among the 16 drivers who have already qualified for the All-Star Race, to the green flag in this 85-lap race around the four-turn, 0.533-mile (0.858-kilometer) high-banked oval in Bristol, Tennessee in his #34 Ford alongside Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almirola in second place in his #10 Ford.

Leavine Family Racing rookie Christopher Bell is set to start in third place in his #95 Toyota alongside JTG Daugherty Racing’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in fourth in his #47 Chevrolet.

Richard Childress Racing rookie Tyler Reddick is set to start in fifth place in his #8 Chevrolet alongside Richard Petty Motorsports’ Bubba Wallace in sixth in his #43 Chevrolet. Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron is set to start in seventh in his #24 Chevrolet alongside Roush Fenway Racing’s Chris Buescher in eighth in his #17 Ford.

Set to round out the top 10 in ninth and 10th place in their #14 Ford and #21 Ford are Stewart-Haas Racing’s Clint Bowyer and Wood Brothers Racing’s Matt DiBenedetto, respectively.

This race is set to consist of three stages, the first two being 35-lap stages and the third stage being a 15-lap stage. The winners of these three stages will qualify for the All-Star Race. The winners of the first two stages will drop out of the All-Star Open once they have won.

One final spot in the All-Star Race will go to the winner of the NASCAR Fan Vote, or the highest finisher of the NASCAR Fan Vote should the driver receiving the most votes end up being one of the three stage winners of the All-Star Open.
