With a damaged tire, Lewis Hamilton hung on to win the British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit for his third consecutive Formula 1 victory.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton may have led each of the 52 laps of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit, denying Formula 1 what would have been its first true lead change of the 2020 season through four races.

But what was seemingly a straightforward third consecutive and 87th career victory nearly fell away from him on the final lap.

It was a 1-2 for Mercedes all race until the closing laps. Teammate Valtteri Bottas had tire issues and surrendered second place to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to make a late pit stop.

As a result of the gap behind him, Verstappen came into the pits for an effective free pit stop to get new tires to go for the race’s fastest lap around the 18-turn, 3.661-mile (5.892-kilometer) road course in Silverstone, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom.

Verstappen was able to do that and secure one bonus point on lap 52, but perhaps it was not the best idea in terms of winning the race, as Hamilton’s front left tire went away on the same lap.

The six-time world champion was able to hang on for the win, but not before a lead of over 34 seconds shrunk to just a 5.856-second victory, a gap that Verstappen easily would have been able to overcome had he not made a late pit stop, assuming, of course, that he did not end up dealing with tire issues of his own.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished in third place for a surprise podium ahead of Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo in a season-best fourth. Bottas did not score any points, finishing in 11th.

McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr. also had tire issues late, denying him what would have been a fourth place finish following Bottas’s issues. He finished in 14th.
