Max Verstappen delivered Red Bull their first victory of the 2020 Formula 1 season by utilizing a brilliant tire strategy to perfection at Silverstone Circuit.

Mercedes won’t be winning every Grand Prix in the 2020 Formula 1 season after opening the year on a four-race winning streak.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who started Sunday’s 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit in fourth place, utilized a brilliant tire strategy to beat Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas to secure his first win since he won last November’s Brazilian Grand Prix at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace.

Verstappen delivered Red Bull their first victory at the 18-turn, 3.661-mile (5.892-kilometer) Silverstone Circuit road course in Silverstone, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom since Mark Webber won at the track in 2012. His win is Honda’s first win at the track since 1989, when Alain Prost won driving for McLaren.

Verstappen started the race on hard tires and was able to to gain track position over Bottas, who started the race from the pole position, and Hamilton by making his hard tires last well longer than their mediums. He then took medium tires for a super short stint and blew past Bottas before pitting again for hards.

Bottas, who also pitted again for hards, had nothing to challenge the 22-year-old Dutchman, but Mercedes left Hamilton out in the lead. However, he then needed to make a late pit stop for new hard tires as well, and while he was able to pass Bottas for second place, he could only manage to finish 11.326 seconds behind a dominant Verstappen.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc managed to secure a solid fourth place finish on a one-stop strategy to boost himself to fourth in the driver standings and Ferrari to third in the constructor standings.

Red Bull’s Alexander Albon again made some impressive overtaking maneuvers en route to a solid fifth place result ahead of Racing Point teammates Lance Stroll and Nico Hulkenberg in sixth and seventh, respectively. Renault’s Esteban Ocon made a one-stop strategy work en route to finishing in eighth.
