Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson is still eyeing future IndyCar competition. If he does compete, where will he make his debut?

Plans for seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson to make his debut behind the wheel of an IndyCar went out the window when his test at Barber Motorsports Park was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 44-year-old El Cajon, California native had long talked about the possibility of competing in IndyCar road course races once his Cup Series career comes to a close, and this seemed to be the first step in that direction.

Johnson is currently in his 19th season as a full-time Cup Series driver for Hendrick Motorsports, but he confirmed this past November that it is set to be his final year behind the wheel of the #48 Chevrolet.

He had been slated to test for Arrow McLaren SP on Monday, April 6. After those plans were canceled, he confirmed that driving an IndyCar is still on his “bucket list”, and he did end up making his virtual IndyCar debut in the IndyCar iRacing Challenge, which IndyCar and iRacing introduced in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Johnson competed in the races at virtual Watkins Glen International and virtual Barber Motorsports Park, and he finished in 16th and 12th place, respectively.

He did get the chance to make his first IndyCar test, as he did so at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course driving a Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing in late July. Even that test came after another canceled test from early July, this time because he contracted COVID-19 himself.

But if Johnson does end up competing in a true IndyCar race like he still wants to, where will he make his debut? Here are the top three options.
