Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson is still focused on competing in NASCAR, but he admits that he hopes to compete in IndyCar at some point.

After winning his record-tying seventh NASCAR Cup Series championship in the 2016 season even after enduring a career-long 24-race win drought earlier in the season, Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson stayed hot to open up the 2017 season, as he won three of the season’s first 13 races.

But since he earned his 83rd victory to launch himself into a sixth place tie on the all-time Cup Series wins list at Dover International Speedway in June of 2017, the 44-year-old El Cajon, California native has not been to victory lane.

With 29 races on the 36-race 2019 schedule having been completed, Johnson is currently riding a career-long 88-race win drought.

More from IndyCar

Johnson is under contract with Hendrick Motorsports through the 2020 season, and he has made clear that he remains focused on getting his #48 Chevrolet back to victory lane in the Cup Series.

However, while Johnson has maintained that his focus is on getting back on the right track in the Cup Series moving toward the end of the 2019 season and into the 2020 season, he admits that he wants to compete in IndyCar at some point.

Here is is what he had to say about the possibility of competing in IndyCar, according to Motorsport.

"“I don’t have any plans on running any IndyCar races next season. Running in IndyCar is certainly on my bucket list, and hopefully I’ll get an opportunity to do it one day. I’m focused on NASCAR and the 48 team and getting it back to where it needs to be.”"

He added that he wants to compete in road courses, likely not in the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

"“As far as the Indy 500 is concerned, I’ve had a couple of different opportunities over the years and I think [the chance of] running the Indy 500 has passed for me. Hopefully someday down the road I’ll have the opportunity to race a road course in an IndyCar.”"

Johnson previously stated that he would like to drive in road course races, and he stated that his experience driving Fernando Alonso’s Formula 1 car last November was an “eye-opening experience”.

Days after this experience, he stated that he was interested in IndyCar, “without a doubt”. Now almost one year later, it is clear that he still has his eye on a future in America’s premier open-wheel racing series after his NASCAR career concludes.
