Valtteri Bottas took advantage of Lewis Hamilton’s penalties to secure his second win of the 2020 Formula 1 season at Sochi Autodrom in the Russian Grand Prix.

On a day that began with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton having a good chance to tie Michael Schumacher’s all-time record of 91 Formula 1 victories, it was the other Mercedes driver, Valtteri Bottas, who saw the checkered flag first in the Russian Grand Prix at Sochi Autodrom, the 10th of 17 races on the 2020 schedule.

Bottas secured his second win of the 2020 season after taking advantage of two five-second time penalties that were issued to Hamilton as a result of the fact that he executed practice starts where he should not have prior to the race.

Bottas started the 53-lap race around the 18-turn, 3.634-mile (5.848-kilometer) road course in Sochi, Krasnodar Krai, Russia in third place.

He made quick work of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for second and then inherited the lead after Hamilton made his pit stop and served what was effectively a 10-second time penalty.

Bottas did not relinquish the lead after that en route to a 7.729-second victory over Verstappen in second place, and he recorded the race’s fastest lap in doing so. Mercedes have now won all seven of the races that have been contested at the track. Hamilton, who started from the pole position but dropped outside of the top 10 after serving his penalties, rallied for a third place finish. Bottas, Verstappen and Hamilton have now finished on the podium together in six races so far this year.

Racing Point’s Sergio Perez led the rest of the field in fourth place ahead of Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo, who overcame a five-second time penalty to finish in fifth, and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in sixth.

Renault’s Esteban Ocon finished in seventh place ahead of AlphaTauri teammates Daniil Kvyat and Pierre Gasly in eighth and ninth, respectively. Red Bull’s Alexander Albon finished in 10th.

Alfa Romeo’s Kimi Raikkonen, who tied Rubens Barrichello’s all-time Formula 1 starts record with his 322nd career start, finished in 14th place.
