NASCAR has already confirmed a cancellation for the 2021 season despite the fact that the offseason between the 2020 and 2021 seasons is only a month underway.

NASCAR confirmed the 36-race 2021 Cup Series schedule in late September. But after a 2020 season that saw a 10-week hiatus cause multiple schedule changes, several cancellations, postponements, doubleheaders, midweek races and even a new venue, a change has already been confirmed for 2021 just one month into the offseason.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the race which had been scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 28 at Auto Club Speedway has been cancelled.

The race which had been scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 21 at Homestead-Miami Speedway has been shifted to Sunday, February 28, with a new race at the Daytona International Speedway road course set to take its place.

As a result, the 2021 schedule now features seven road course races.

With the Daytona 500 scheduled to open up the season at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday, February 14, these changes also mean that the first two races of the season are scheduled to take place at the venue while the first three races of the season are scheduled to take place in the state of Florida.

The formerly scheduled race at Auto Club Speedway was scheduled to be the final race at the four-turn, 2.0-mile (3.219-kilometer) oval in Fontana, California, as the track had been set to be transformed into a four-turn, 0.5-mile (0.805-kilometer) short track for 2022.

However, NASCAR has announced that the transformation will now not happen until after the 2022 race at the earliest, meaning the current configuration is slated to be used at least once more.

These schedule changes also affect the Xfinity Series, which had been scheduled to run at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Saturday, February 20 and Auto Club Speedway on Saturday, February 27. The Truck Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway was scheduled for Friday, February 19 but has been moved to the Daytona International Speedway road course.
