Formula 1: Multiple drivers penalized prior to season finale
By Asher Fair
Multiple drivers have been given starting grid penalties ahead of the 2020 Formula 1 season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit.
The starting lineup set by the qualifying session ahead of the 2020 Formula 1 season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit will not be the exact starting lineup for the year’s 17th race.
Three drivers have been issued starting grid penalties ahead of this 55-lap race around the 21-turn, 3.451-mile (5.554-kilometer) course on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Racing Point’s Sergio Perez and Haas’ Kevin Magnussen are set to start the race from the rear of the field as a result of engine penalties after qualifying in 15th and 17th place, respectively.

Perez’s car is in need of a new internal combustion engine, traction control and MGU-H. Three of each are allowed throughout the season, and these are all slated to be his fourth.
As for Magnussen’s car, his is in need of a new control electronics and energy store. Two of each are allowed throughout the season, and these are both slated to be his third.
The other driver who is set to drop on the grid is Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. After causing an incident which knocked himself and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen out of the race on the opening lap of last Sunday’s Sakhir Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit outer layout, he has been given a three-position grid penalty. After initially qualifying in ninth place, he is set to start in 12th.
Ironically, Leclerc’s incident also spun out Perez, dropping him to the back of the field, but he was able to rally from last place to secure his first win in 190 starts.
