Formula 1: Fernando Alonso involved in road accident

Two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso has been hospitalized after he was involved in a road accident while cycling in Switzerland.

Just one month before the scheduled start of 2021 Formula 1 preseason testing at Bahrain International Circuit, two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has been involved in a car accident while cycling in Switzerland.

The 39-year-old Spaniard has been hospitalized and is reportedly conscious and “well in himself” as he awaits further medical examinations tomorrow morning.

Alpine, the team for which Alonso is slated to compete in the upcoming season, released the following statement on his condition.

"“Alpine F1 Team can confirm that Fernando Alonso has been involved in a road accident while cycling in Switzerland.“Fernando is conscious and well in himself and is awaiting further medical examinations tomorrow morning.“Alpine F1 Team will not make any further statement at this point in time. Further updates will be given tomorrow.”"

Alonso has not competed in Formula 1 since 2018.

He retired after the 2018 season, his 17th season in the sport and fourth in a row (fifth overall) with McLaren. However, after two full seasons away, during which time he competed in various other forms of motorsport, he is set to return to Formula 1 in 2021.

He signed with the team previously known as Renault as the replacement for the McLaren-bound Daniel Ricciardo alongside Esteban Ocon. He won his two world championships back with Renault in 2005 and 2006.

Alonso’s 32 career Formula 1 wins, the most recent of which coming in the 2013 Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, rank sixth on the all-time wins list. He won 15 races with Renault from 2003 to 2006, including 14 in 2005 and 2006.

Preseason testing is scheduled to take place from Friday, March 12 to Sunday, March 14 following a coronavirus pandemic restriction-related schedule change. The 2021 season is scheduled to get underway at the same venue, Bahrain International Circuit, on Sunday, March 28 with the Bahrain Grand Prix.
