Martin Truex Jr. has taken the pole position for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway, the Toyota Owners 400.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. is set to pick up this weekend where he left off last weekend, as he is set to start from the pole position in Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway.

Truex earned the pole position for this 400-lap Toyota Owners 400 around the four-turn, 0.75-mile (1.207-kilometer) oval in Richmond, Virginia based on NASCAR’s starting lineup formula, which placed a heavy weight on his win in this past Sunday’s race at Martinsville Speedway.

Take a look at this four-part formula (three parts for most full-time drivers).

  • 50% based on finish in previous race
    • 25% based on driver finish
    • 25% based on car owner finish
  • 35% based on rank in owner standings
  • 15% based on rank of fastest lap in previous race

Truex won for the third time in his last four starts at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday, and he now heads to another track where he has won two of the last three races. His #19 team sits in second place in the owner standings.

His win, coupled with his team’s position in the standings and the fact that he recorded the fifth fastest lap en route to the win, netted him the pole position for this Sunday’s race. Teammate Denny Hamlin is set to start alongside Truex on the front row in second place behind the wheel of his #11 Toyota. Hamlin’s #11 team has a sizable lead in the owner standings, and Hamlin finished in third at Martinsville Speedway after recording the fastest lap.

Hendrick Motorsports teammates Chase Elliott and William Byron, who finished in second and fourth place at Martinsville Speedway, respectively, are set to share the second row in third and fourth behind the wheels of their #9 Chevrolet and #24 Chevrolet.
