NASCAR: Chase Elliott penalized ahead of Darlington race

Chase Elliott is set to drop to the rear for the start of today’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway, the Goodyear 400.
Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott was slated to start today’s NASCAR Cup Series race, the Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway, in sixth place behind the wheel of his #9 Chevrolet as a result of the starting lineup formula.
However, he is set to drop to the rear ahead of this 293-lap race around the four-turn, 1.366-mile (2.198-kilometer) egg-shaped oval in Darlington, South Carolina.

Unapproved adjustments were made to Elliott’s #9 Chevrolet ahead of the race.

As a result, he is set to drop to the tail end of the outside lane and take the green flag in 36th place in the 37-car field instead of sixth.
Set to join Elliott at the rear of the field is Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almirola. Almirola’s #10 Ford failed pre-race inspection twice. Almirola won’t have to drop back nearly as far as Elliott, as he was slated to start in 27th place. He is set to drop to the rear of the inside lane and start in 37th.
