Following Saturday’s qualifying session, the starting lineup for the crown jewel event on the Formula 1 schedule, the Monaco Grand Prix, is set.

Saturday’s qualifying session set the starting lineup for the fifth race on the 23-race 2021 Formula 1 calendar, the Monaco Grand Prix at Circuit de Monaco, and like the four that had already taken place this season, it was yet another intense qualifying session.

But this one wasn’t the usual Red Bull vs. Mercedes/Max Verstappen vs. Lewis Hamilton battle like the rest have been this year.

Ferrari entered this session looking like the favorites after an interesting three practice sessions, and in one way, they did not disappoint.

Both drivers qualified on the front two rows, with Charles Leclerc taking the pole position for his home race, his first pole position of any kind since 2019, and Carlos Sainz Jr. qualifying in fourth place. But that wasn’t the end of the story.

Leclerc took the pole position for this 78-lap race around the 19-turn, 2.074-mile (3.338-kilometer) temporary street circuit in Monte Carlo, Monaco by recording a top lap time of 70.346 seconds (106.138 miles per hour) in the third and final round of qualifying for the race — and then he crashed to solidify it.

Both Verstappen, who qualified in second place, and Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, who qualified in third, were on hot laps when the red flag flew as a result of Leclerc’s crash.

Leclerc, who now has eight career pole positions, is currently slated to maintain his top starting spot, though that will ultimately depend on the extent of the damage to his car.

Hamilton qualified in a disappointing seventh place behind drivers from a total of five different teams, as McLaren’s Lando Norris qualified in fifth ahead of AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly in sixth.
