Mercedes have had double retirements before, most recently in 2018, but when is the last time both cars were running outside of the points at the end of a Formula 1 race?

After a disastrous Monaco Grand Prix at Circuit de Monaco saw them score just seven points on a Lewis Hamilton seventh place finish with the fastest lap, seven-time reigning Formula 1 world champion Mercedes were slated to get at least some redemption in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at Baku City Circuit.

Thanks to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen crashing out of the lead with just over five laps remaining, Hamilton had a chance to restart in second place and perhaps secure a victory, or at the very least, a podium finish.

But on the restart with two laps remaining, he locked up his brakes and drove into the turn one runoff area. He got back onto the track and finished in 15th place, ending a record 54-race scoring streak that had dated back to the 2018 British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit.

Valtteri Bottas, whose wheel issue in the pits during the Monaco Grand Prix forced him to retire the car, had a disastrous weekend all around, from being stuck in an airport in Finland to his on-track performance. He qualified in 10th place and was unable to do anything from there. He was forced to settle for 12th.

As a result, both Silver Arrows finished outside of the points.

The two Mercedes cars have both been forced to retire from races before, most recently in the 2018 Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring — and most notably in the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.

But the last time both Mercedes cars actually finished a race on the track while running outside of the points was nine seasons ago. It had not happened since the 2012 United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas; it had never happened in the Hamilton/Mercedes era.

Hamilton ironically won that race driving for McLaren in a Mercedes-powered entry, but Mercedes factory drivers Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher finished in 13th and 16th place, respectively. This win was Hamilton’s last prior to his move to Mercedes.

Mercedes will be looking to bounce back at Circuit Paul Ricard in the French Grand Prix, which Hamilton won in 2018 and 2019 before it was axed from the 2020 calendar due to COVID-19-related restrictions. This race is set to be broadcast live on ESPN beginning at 9:00 a.m. ET on Sunday, June 20.
