The starting lineup for Sunday’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit is set following the first ever Formula 1 sprint qualifying race.

Formula 1 utilized a sprint qualifying race set the starting lineup for a Grand Prix for the first time ever on Saturday, as Silverstone Circuit played host to that shortened (roughly one-third distance) race ahead of tomorrow’s British Grand Prix.

The starting lineup for today’s 17-lap race around the 18-turn, 3.661-mile (5.892-kilometer) road course in Silverstone, Northamptonshire, United Kingdom was set by a traditional three-round Formula 1 knockout qualifying session on Friday, but the results of this race are what set the starting lineup for the main event tomorrow.

By winning the sprint qualifying race, he also scored three points, three points that are not awarded in a typical qualifying session.

Hamilton, who finished the sprint qualifying race 1.430 seconds behind Verstappen in second place, was awarded two points and is set to join Verstappen on the front row in second for tomorrow’s race. Today’s third place finisher, Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, was awarded one point and is set to start in third tomorrow.

The biggest loser of the day was Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, who started in fifth place but spun just a few laps into the race. He was later forced to retire his car and is set to start in 20th (last) tomorrow.
