Sunday morning’s qualifying session set the starting lineup for the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

After the NASCAR Xfinity Series debuted at the track last year and made its second appearance there yesterday afternoon following the IndyCar race, the Cup Series is set for its first ever race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course this afternoon.

The race at the Brickyard had been the Brickyard 400, which was contested on the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) oval in Speedway, Indiana each year from 1994 to 2020, but that tradition has been pushed out in favor of the influx of road course races on this year’s schedule.

This afternoon’s race around the 13-turn, 2.439-mile (3.925-kilometer) interior road course is set to be a 82-lap race, and it was Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron who took the pole position in this morning’s qualifying session, the penultimate qualifying session of the 36-race 2021 season.

More from NASCAR Cup Series

Byron took the pole position for the antepenultimate race of the 26-race regular season by recording a top lap time of 87.765 seconds (100.044 miles per hour) behind the wheel of his #24 Chevrolet in the second and final round of qualifying for the race.

Set to start beside Byron on the front row in second place behind the wheel of his #14 Ford is Stewart-Haas Racing rookie Chase Briscoe, who won the inaugural Xfinity Series race at the track last season and is looking for his first career Cup Series victory to lock himself into the playoffs.

Hendrick Motorsports teammates Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson are set to shared the second row in third and fourth place behind the wheels of their #9 Chevrolet and #5 Chevrolet, respectively. WynnBET lists Elliott and Larson as the top two favorites for this race, with Elliott at +200 and Larson at +325.
