If this Lewis Hamilton F1 trend holds true once again, Tom Brady could be looking at yet another Super Bowl title next month.

Tom Brady and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers are attempting to become the first repeat Super Bowl champions since Brady and his New England Patriots won both Super Bowl XXXVIII and Super Bowl XXXIX to cap off the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

And if a recent trend involving Brady and his former New York City neighbor holds true, he may very well secure that eighth Super Bowl ring three weeks from today in Super Bowl LVI.

Lewis Hamilton, another athlete pursuing what would have been a record-breaking eighth title this past season, saw his quest for glory fall short on the final lap of the 2021 Formula 1 season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit six weeks ago.

It was Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who entered the 22nd and final race of the season tied with the Mercedes driver on points, who prevailed, leading only the race’s 58th and final lap to cap off a 10-win season with his maiden F1 world championship.

This means that for the first time in nearly a decade, we could be looking at a season without Hamilton or Brady winning the title.

It hasn’t happened since the 2013 season, when Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel won his fourth straight F1 world title and the Russell Wilson-led Seattle Seahawks won Super Bowl XLVIII.

Take a look at the list of championships won by these two seven-time champions since then.

Naturally, there will always be an element of controversy associated with Hamilton’s runner-up finish, though championships are never truly won or lost in one lap or one turn. And at the end of the day, his 22-race point total fell shy of Verstappen’s by eight points, thanks to, quite literally, hundreds of factors throughout the eight-and-a-half-month season.

Considering the rate at which Hamilton reeled off championships throughout the V6 turbo hybrid era, there are probably a few other big-name athletes who can point to this trend, or something similar.

But there’s just something about this one in that it features two seven-time champions, two seven-time champions who have literally been neighbors, that makes this one stand out.

Here is what Brady, then a six-time Super Bowl champion, had to say about Hamilton as he closed in on his sixth world title in November 2019.

"“I’ve followed him for a little bit. I’ve kind of gone to a few of those races and those guys are super talented. I think it’s tough to stay at the top, and talking to guys that know him and that race against him, he just sees things differently than everyone else.“So, I think that’s what makes him so exceptional. I think it’s a lot like that for football players too is, you know, you take people that kind of all do the same thing, but then someone always sees it a different way. The uniqueness, and then the competitiveness, and then the competitive stamina help you stay on top. He’s my neighbor. He lives a floor above me in New York.”"

Of course, there’s another trend that might be worth noting: it was Hamilton’s eighth F1 world championship that he saw slip away in Abu Dhabi, extending an extremely baffling trend of seven-time champions coming up shy in their attempts to win an eighth.

Brady himself is looking for his eighth as well. Could he also come up short?
