Follow along with our live qualifying updates for the first ever NASCAR Cup Series race at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

For the first time in the 44-year history of the annual NASCAR Cup Series season-opening exhibition race, the Busch Light Clash is set to be held at a venue other than Daytona International Speedway.

Last year’s event was the first in race history not to be held at the Daytona Beach, Florida track’s four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) high-banked oval, as it was contested on the 14-turn, 3.61-mile (5.810-kilometer) road course.

But this year’s race is set to be contested at a purpose-built quarter-mile oval inside Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the home of the USC Trojans football team.

With the change in location, NASCAR has introduced a new format for the Busch Light Clash.

Tonight, each of the 36 cars on the entry list are slated to make a qualifying attempt in a single-car session. Each driver is set to run two laps around the tight, low-banked track, and the better of those two laps will be the lap that counts on the speed chart.

This qualifying session is slated to set the starting lineups for the four 25-lap heat races tomorrow afternoon, with the fastest driver taking the pole position for the first heat race, the second fastest driver taking the pole position for the second heat race, the third fastest driver taking the pole position for the third heat race, and the fourth fastest driver taking the pole position for the fourth heat race.

Those four heat races precede the two 50-lap last-chance qualifying races, which will solidify the 23-car field for the 150-lap main event.

A full rundown of the new format can be found here.
