IndyCar: 2022 Belle Isle qualifying – Full starting lineup
By Asher Fair
The starting lineup for the final IndyCar race on the streets of Belle Isle is set following Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session.
For the 30th and final time, IndyCar is set to race on the streets of Belle Isle this Sunday afternoon, as the race is set to move back to the streets of downtown Detroit, Michigan beginning next year.
Sunday’s race, the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, is the lone IndyCar race at the track this weekend, a notable change from past years.
Save for 2020, when the race weekend at the track was completely canceled as a result of COVID-19-related restrictions, the track has hosted a doubleheader every year since 2013.
Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden took the pole position for Sunday afternoon’s 70-lap race around the 14-turn, 2.35-mile (3.782-kilometer) Raceway on Belle Isle temporary street circuit.
Newgarden took the pole position with a top lap time of 75.2153 seconds (112.477 miles per hour) behind the wheel of his #2 Chevrolet in the Firestone Fast Six qualifying session. He is set to be joined on the front row by Dale Coyne Racing with Rick Ware Racing’s Takuma Sato behind the wheel of his #51 Honda.
Newgarden is the seventh different polesitter through seven races in 2022.
