Keep tabs on Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session for Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Texas Motor Speedway.

The second round of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, the round of 12, is scheduled to get underway on Sunday afternoon at Texas Motor Speedway with the AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 500.

There are 12 drivers still eligible to win this year’s championship entering this 334-lap race around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) Fort Worth, Texas oval, the first of three races in the round of 12. There are still 12 teams eligible to win the owner title as well, though one team’s driver is not a playoff driver.

The single-car qualifying session for the round of 12 opener is set to utilize the format that has been used for most races since the start of the 2022 season.

While the qualifying formula (full details here) is still used to determine the qualifying order, there is one small difference: the drivers/teams still in contention for the championship are set to qualify at the end of whichever group they are in.

Which drivers are in which group is determined by the results of the most recent playoff race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

After each driver makes a single-lap qualifying attempt in round one, the fastest five drivers in each group advance to the second round. All 10 of those drivers make another single-lap attempt.

The speeds from the second round determine the top 10 in the starting lineup, while the speeds from the first round determine the rest of the lineup, irrespective of the group in which they were set.
