The 2026 edition of Formula 1 silly season is finally ramping up, with rumors about multiple drivers flaring up over the past few weeks. With several drivers due to be out of contract at the end of the season, some key names could be making moves, setting up the potential for a domino effect.
Carlos Sainz Jr. has been vocal about his disappointment with Williams this season and has vaguely outlined a timeline for deciding his future. Despite an incredible 2025 season, the Spanish driver may look to end his tenure with Williams after just two years.
Cadillac may also have an opening, as Sergio Perez is reassessing his future with the team even before the end of his first season there. The Mexican driver may see an opportunity to move back up the hierarchy of teams after a difficult debut season for the grid’s 11th team.
The domino effect starts with Carlos Sainz
Sainz’s departure from Williams would truly kick things off, and it is something he is seriously considering as we exit the summer break in the coming weeks.
The 31-year-old is said to be considering Audi and potentially even Red Bull, in the event that Max Verstappen unexpectedly departs the team.
If the Spaniard were to leave, it would pave the way for Perez to replace him swiftly. Perez and his entourage have reportedly reached out to Williams on their own to open talks on a potential move. While Perez is nearing the end of his career, he brings substantial sponsorship, coupled with extensive experience on the inner workings of a championship-winning team.
If Perez were to depart Cadillac and replace Sainz at Williams, it would create an opening alongside Valtteri Bottas for 2027. At the moment, Rafael Camara is the clear favorite for the seat. The 2025 Formula 3 champion is one of three drivers seriously contending for this season’s Formula 2 championship.
Nevertheless, these three drivers are the focus of silly season at the moment and will be ones to watch as we exit the summer break and head into September. It all starts with Sainz's decision.
