After eight consecutive seasons in which the NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Charlotte Motor Speedway was run on the track's interior Roval, the Bank of America 400 has been moved back to the oval for the first time since 2017 this weekend.
Because the Concord, North Carolina oval is a four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) track, the standard qualifying format is set to be used to determine the starting lineup for Sunday's 267-lap race (weather permitting, of course, as there is rain in the forecast for Saturday and three of the first five postseason qualifying sessions have already been canceled).
The qualifying metric determined the full 39-car qualifying order, although it split up the non-playoff drivers in the playoff drivers to ensure that the 16 drivers who still have championship aspirations are the final 16 drivers to qualify. The metric is based on the owner standings (30%) and the results of the most recent race (70%).
Each driver is set to make a single-lap qualifying attempt in this single-car session, unlike on short tracks where drivers are allowed to run two laps, and there is only a single round, unlike on superspeedways where the top 10 drivers advance to a second-round shootout for the pole position.
Follow along with our qualifying updates from Charlotte Motor Speedway ahead of Sunday's Bank of America 400.
Update, qualifying canceled due to rain.
