NASCAR Cup Series starting lineup at Talladega if there's another rainout

NASCAR Cup Series qualifying sessions have been canceled frequently during the postseason. Could it happen again at Talladega Superspeedway?

While the weather forecast for this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway is about as good as you could ask for as a NASCAR fan, we're not taking our chances.

The April qualifying session at the four-turn, 2.66-mile (4.281-kilometer) high-banked Lincoln, Alabama oval was one of five canceled during the regular season, and just three of the first seven qualifying sessions have actually not been rained out.

In the event of a qualifying rainout, the starting lineup for Sunday's 188-lap race would be determined by the qualifying metric, albeit not necessarily in reverse order of the qualifying order. The metric takes into account the owner standings (30%) and the results of the most recent race (70%).

In the postseason, the non-playoff drivers are factored into the qualifying order first, to ensure that the 16 championship contenders are the final 16 to qualify. But when qualifying is canceled, drivers are not split up based on whether they are in the postseason or not.

Four non-playoff drivers would start Sunday's YellaWood 500 in the top 16 if qualifying is rained out, while three playoff drivers would start 20th or lower. Here's how the full starting lineup would look.
