The 2016 ABC Supply 500 had major Verizon IndyCar Series championship implications as Will Power scored his fourth victory and Simon Pagenaud crashed late.

Will Power swung a huge blow in the IndyCar title fight Monday, winning the 2016 ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway while Simon Pagenaud‘s car ended up on the hook.

Power started eighth and quietly worked his way through the field, holding off Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ Mikhail Aleshin to earn the victory and much-needed championship points.

Aleshin made history at Pocono when he captured the pole; he ran up front most of race day, as did Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay, who could’ve been the winner if his engine hadn’t lost power on Lap 164 of 200. But an undeterred RHR surged back through the pack to go from a lap down to finish third.

Yet the big story of Sunday is the now completely shifted IndyCar championship picture.

Power now ties Pagenaud with four race victories in the 2016 season, and is just 20 points behind Pagenaud in the title hunt with two and a half events to go.

That’s because on Lap 158 and while within the Top 10, Pagenaud’s No. 22 bottomed out and the Frenchman wound up in the Turn 1 wall. Third-place title contender Helio Castroneves also did not finish after being the innocent victim in a pit lane collision between Alexander Rossi and Charlie Kimball, that saw Rossi’s car actually wind up briefly on top of Castroneves’ No. 3.

All three drivers were uninjured in the wreck, but Rossi – who was leading the ABC Supply 500 at the time – and Castroneves were done for the day.

Because of those two incidents there’s now a new pecking order for the title. Josef Newgarden moves up into third, after capturing a much-needed fourth-place finish at Pocono. Newgarden is 100 points back of Pagenaud and will not be able to gain points at Texas because of his crash prior to the postponement of the race.

And defending IndyCar champion Scott Dixon, whom many had written off, is now fourth for the 2016 title. Dixon finished a comfortable sixth on Sunday and is scored a mere 11 points behind Newgarden.
