IndyCar: Scuderia Corsa looking to join the series full-time?
By Alex Herbst
IndyCar is in the midst of a new team boon, with four new organizations joining in 2018. Could Scuderia Corsa be the next team to make the jump?
The renaissance for the IndyCar Series is alive and well in 2018. Four new teams are fielding cars in the new year, with Carlin, Juncos, Shank, and Harding helping to boost the grid to close to 25 cars per race. Other teams are throwing their names in the ring as well for the Indianapolis 500, including Belardi and Scuderia Corsa. It is the latter of these teams that is preparing for a potential move into the series full-time in the near future.
As reported by RACER.com, the IMSA GT stalwart is considering an expansion into the IndyCar Series full-time in 2019 or 2020 after partnering with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing for this year’s Indy 500. The team will provide technical and personnel support to RLL for the #64 Honda of Oriol Servia in the greatest spectacle in racing. The team’s current full-time efforts are focused on fielding Ferraris in the GTD class of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
Team owner Giacomo Mattioli had this to say about the potential of Scuderia Corsa expanding to IndyCar, according to Racer.com:
"Absolutely, we are interested in a full-season entry. We’re not there yet, but we are definitely looking at it. IndyCar has done a fantastic job – the product they offer, the platform, the new car looks great, and there’s a lot of interest in it. We’re working diligently towards it. We don’t know whether it will be next year or the year after, but we are working towards it.IndyCar racing has been spectacular for a few years – very competitive, many winners. Now, everybody is complaining about Formula 1; it’s always one team [dominating] or another, but in IndyCar you don’t have one team that dominates, which makes it very interesting."

Scuderia Corsa’s name can now be added to a growing list of interested parties in fielding a team at the top of the open-wheel ladder in America. Belardi Autosport, who will help field an entry for James Davison in the Indy 500, is interested in a move up from Indy Lights. Formula One team McLaren has also expressed interest in following up on their partnership with Andretti Autosport that allowed Fernando Alonso to race at Indianapolis recently.
The question appears to be when not if IndyCar will reach a limit for their field size. Some tracks currently contested by the series, especially the ovals, may not be able to properly fit more than 30 fast, sleek IndyCars. Briefly after unification with Champ Car, the series set field maximums for certain tracks, though they were hardly if ever needed.
