Indy 500: Helio Castroneves tops sixth and final pre-qualifying practice session

Helio Castroneves topped the speed chart in the sixth and final pre-qualifying practice for the 102nd running of the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Team Penske’s Helio Castroneves topped the speed chart in the sixth and final pre-qualifying practice for the 102nd running of the Indianapolis 500 in his #3 Chevrolet. Only 11 drivers participated in the relatively short session on Saturday morning.

Castroneves topped the session at the four-turn, 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval in Speedway, Indiana by recording his fastest lap at 229.505 miles per hour (39.2148 seconds). He led a top five Chevrolet sweep and a top two Team Penske sweep of the session.

Team Penske’s Will Power finished in second place in the session in his #12 Chevrolet ahead of Dreyer & Reinbold Racing’s J.R. Hildebrand, Harding Racing’s Gabby Chaves and Dreyer & Reinbold Racing’s Sage Karam in third, fourth and fifth in their #66 Chevrolet, #88 Chevrolet and #24 Chevrolet, respectively.

The fastest Honda driver in the practice session was Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Oriol Servia in his #64 Honda. He ended up on sixth place on the speed chart. Of the 11 drivers who participated in the session, eight were Chevrolet drivers while only three were Honda drivers. All three of the Honda drivers were Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing drivers, including Servia and his teammates Takuma Sato and Graham Rahal.

There will be no more on-track action prior to Bump Day qualifying later today. A total of 35 IndyCar drivers will attempt to qualify for the 102nd running of the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing”. A total of 33 will do so, while two will be left on the outside looking in.
