IndyCar: Josef Newgarden tops first 2018 Iowa Corn 300 practice session

Josef Newgarden topped the speed chart in the first of two practice sessions for the 11th race of the 2018 IndyCar season, the Iowa Corn 300.

Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden topped the speed chart in the first practice session for the 2018 Iowa Corn 300, which is the 11th race of the 17-race 2018 IndyCar season. He led a 1-2 Chevrolet sweep and a 1-2 Team Penske sweep in the session in his #1 Chevrolet.

Newgarden topped the speed chart in this practice session by recording top lap speed of 183.711 miles per hour (17.519 seconds) around the four-turn, 0.894-mile (1.439-kilometer) Iowa Speedway oval in Newton, Iowa.

Team Penske’s Will Power finished the practice session in second place on the speed chart behind Newgarden in his #12 Chevrolet. Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay was the fastest Honda driver in the session. He finished the session in third place in his #28 Honda.

Two of the other three Andretti Autosport drivers rounded out the top five on the speed chart in this practice session. Alexander Rossi finished in fourth place in his #27 Honda and rookie Zach Veach finished in fifth in his #26 Honda.

Team Penske’s other driver, Simon Pagenaud, finished in eighth place in his #22 Chevrolet, and Andretti Autosport’s other driver, Marco Andretti, who technically drives for Andretti Herta Autosport, finished in ninth in his #98 Honda.

The fastest non-Team Penske Chevrolet driver in the practice session was Ed Carpenter Racing’s Spencer Pigot, who finished in sixth place in his #21 Chevrolet. The fastest non-Andretti Autosport Honda driver in the session was Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ James Hinchcliffe, who finished in seventh in his #5 Honda.

Qualifying for the Iowa Corn 300 is scheduled to take place this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. ET. It is scheduled to be broadcast live starting at that time on NBC Sports Network. The second and final practice session for the race is scheduled to take place tonight at 6:45 p.m. ET. It is scheduled to be broadcast live on IndyCar RaceControl, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
