IndyCar: Will Power takes pole for 2019 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg

Will Power took the pole position for the 2019 IndyCar season opener, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Team Penske’s Will Power took the pole position for the first of 17 races on the 2019 IndyCar schedule, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. This pole position is the eighth of his career for this race alone, and it is the 55th overall pole of his career.

Power took the pole position for this race by recording a top lap time of 60.4594 seconds (107.179 miles per hour) around the 14-turn, 1.8-mile (2.897-kilometer) temporary street circuit in St. Petersburg, Florida in his #12 Chevrolet in the third and final round of qualifying for the race, the Firestone Fast Six.

Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden is set to start alongside Power in second place in his #2 Chevrolet. Aside of Power, however, he is the only driver who qualified in the top seven.

Chip Ganassi Racing rookie Felix Rosenqvist, who advanced to the Firestone Fast Six because Harding Steinbrenner Racing rookie Colton Herta was penalized for interfering with the lap of Carlin’s Charlie Kimball in the second round of qualifying, was the highest qualifying Honda driver for the race. He qualified in third in his #10 Honda.

The other three drivers who advanced to the Firestone Fast Six were Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon and Andretti Autosport teammates Ryan Hunter-Reay and Alexander Rossi. These three drivers qualified in fourth, fifth and sixth place in their #9 Honda, #28 Honda and #27 Honda, respectively.

Meyer Shank Racing’s Jack Harvey, Kimball, Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports’ James Hinchcliffe, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal, Herta and DragonSpeed rookie Ben Hanley were the six drivers who advanced to the second round of qualifying but failed to advance to the Firestone Fast Six.

These six drivers qualified in seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th place in their #60 Honda, #23 Chevrolet, #5 Honda, #15 Honda, #88 Honda and #81 Chevrolet, respectively.

The morning warm-up session for the race is scheduled to take place tomorrow from 9:20 a.m. ET through 9:50 a.m, and it is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Gold. NBC Sports Network is set to broadcast the race itself live beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET tomorrow, and the race is scheduled to get underway at roughly 1:30 p.m. ET.
