IndyCar: Entry list for the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500
By Asher Fair
A total of 36 IndyCar drivers are set to attempt to qualify for the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The month of May has finally arrived, and the next race on the 2019 IndyCar schedule, which is the sixth race of the 17-race season, is the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
A total of 36 drivers are set to attempt to qualify for this 200-lap race around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval in Speedway, Indiana, which is the highest number of drivers attempting to qualify for the Indy 500 since 41 drivers attempted to do so for the 95th running of the race back in 2011.
However, to preserve the 33-car tradition of the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing”, only 33 of these drivers will successfully qualify for this race while the other three will be bumped from the field.

A total of 30 drivers are set to lock themselves into the field for this race in this Saturday’s qualifying session while the remaining six drivers will be set to attempt to re-qualify in Sunday’s qualifying session, where the fastest three drivers will earn starting positions on the 11th and final row on the starting grid for the race and the slowest three drivers will not compete in it.
Meanwhile, the fastest nine qualifiers in Saturday’s qualifying session will be set to attempt to re-qualify in Sunday’s qualifying session as well. Their new qualifying speeds will set the starting grid from the first through the third row.
Of the 36 drivers who are set to attempt to qualify for this race, 20 are full-time drivers. Despite a recent (and pointless) debate about whether or not full-time drivers should be guaranteed starting positions in the Indy 500, these 20 drivers must qualify for this race on their own.
These 20 drivers, of whom four are rookies, represent 10 different teams. The other 16 drivers, of whom three are rookies, who are set to attempt to qualify for this race are part-time drivers and/or Indy 500 one-offs, and they represent 13 different teams, including seven that are represented by the full-time drivers and six that are not.
Of these 16 part-time drivers, eight are part-time drivers who set to compete in and/or have competed in at least one other IndyCar race this season. These eight drivers, of whom two are rookies, represent six different teams, including three that are represented by the full-time drivers and three that are not.
The other eight of these 16 part-time drivers, of whom one is a rookie, are Indy 500 one-offs, and they represent seven different teams, including four that are represented by the full-time drivers and three that are not.
Here is a list of the 36 drivers who are set to attempt to qualify for the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
NOTE: Italics denote part-time drivers . The * denotes Indy 500 one-offs while the (R) denotes the Indy 500 rookies.
