Only six IndyCar drivers completed laps during the fifth practice session for the 2019 Indianapolis 500, and Fernando Alonso topped the speed chart.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway was open from 8:00 a.m. ET to 9:30 a.m. ET this morning for what was the fifth practice session for the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500 and the final practice session ahead of qualifying for the 17-race 2019 IndyCar season’s sixth race.

A total of only six drivers took advantage of the opportunity to participate in the fifth practice session for this 200-lap race around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval in Speedway, Indiana.

Three of the six drivers who participated in this practice session were three of the four drivers who wrecked at some point throughout the week.

More from IndyCar

McLaren Racing’s Fernando Alonso, one of the drivers who wrecked earlier this week, recorded the top lap time of this practice session. He recorded a top lap time of 39.4625 seconds (228.065 miles per hour) in this session in his #66 Chevrolet.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Jordan King, one of the drivers who did not wreck earlier this week, was the only Honda driver who participated in this practice session. He finished in second place in his #42 Honda by recording a top lap time of 39.6131 seconds (227.198 seconds).

Juncos Racing’s Kyle Kaiser, DragonSpeed’s Ben Hanley and Carlin teammates Patricio O’Ward, a rookie, and Max Chilton rounded out the top six on the speed chart in this practice session by finishing in third, fourth, fifth and sixth place in their #32 Chevrolet, #81 Chevrolet, #31 Chevrolet and #59 Chevrolet, respectively. Kaiser and O’Ward both crashed earlier this week. Hanley and Chilton did not.

Aside of Chilton’s top lap time of 42.2586 seconds (212.974 miles per hour), the top lap times that these drivers recorded in this practice session were all recorded without a tow, so there is no separate article detailing to no-tow results of this session. Chilton finished this session in sixth (last) place anyway.

Chilton’s top lap time without a tow during this practice session was 43.7997 seconds (205.481 miles per hour), as he only completed three laps during this session.

The top lap times of Kaiser, Hanley and O’Ward in this practice session were 39.7883 seconds (226.197 miles per hour), 39.8467 seconds (225.866 miles per hour) and 39.9101 seconds (225.507 miles per hour), respectively.
