2019 Indy 500: Simon Pagenaud takes the pole position for the 103rd running

Simon Pagenaud took the pole position for the 103rd running of the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the first of his career for this race.

Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud took the first Indianapolis 500 pole position of his IndyCar career by taking the pole position for the 103rd running of the race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Pagenaud finished in third place in yesterday’s qualifying session for the 200-lap race around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, and he improved in in today’s Fast Nine Shootout Pole Day qualifying session put his #22 Chevrolet on the inside of the front row for next Sunday’s running of the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing”.

Pagenaud recorded a four-lap average speed of 229.992 miles per hour in today’s qualifying session to take the pole position for this race.

Ed Carpenter Racing’s Ed Carpenter qualified in second place by recording a four-lap average speed of 229.889 miles per hour in his #20 Chevrolet, and teammate Spencer Pigot, who topped the speed chart in yesterday’s qualifying session for the race, qualified in third to complete the front row by recording a four-lap average speed of 229.826 miles per hour in his #21 Chevrolet.

Ed Carpenter Racing Scuderia Corsa’s Ed Jones qualified in fourth place for this race by recording a four-lap average speed of 229.646 miles per hour in his #63 Chevrolet to give Ed Carpenter Racing drivers three of the top four positions on the starting grid.

Harding Steinbrenner Racing rookie Colton Herta was the highest qualifying Honda driver for the race. He qualified in fifth place by recording a four-lap average speed of 229.086 miles per hour in his #88 Honda. Team Penske’s Will Power is set to join him and Jones on the second row of the starting grid in sixth in his #12 Chevrolet.

Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan’s Sebastien Bourdais, Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden and Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi are set to start the race on the third row after qualifying in seventh, eighth and ninth place in their #18 Honda, #2 Chevrolet and #27 Honda, respectively.
